There are two kinds of photosensitive cells in the retina. Here is a brief rundown about those three functional levels (structurally, the peculiar arrangements in vertebrate eyes are more complex and better omitted for present purposes). And in the third level, those ganglia are connected, via more nerve fibers, to the optic centers of the brain via the optic nerve, essentially a cable of millions of long nerve fibers. In the second level, those cells are connected by short nerve fibers to nerve cells that are sometimes clustered together in ganglia, where they are often connected to each other. The first level is the retina, where millions of photosensitive cells line the back of the eye. Visual acuity depends on the function of three interconnected but distinct levels.

That potentially gives such birds an especially good range of focus (diving birds are an exception - the cornea has the same refractive index as water, so changing its shape would have no effect on focus, and only the lens is used in these birds). But in most birds, both the lens and the cornea can change shape. In humans and other mammals, visual focus is achieved by changing the shape of the lens, bending the incoming light rays so they hit the retina. Acuity is defined as the ability to discriminate two points as separate entities from a distance more particularly, it refers to the ability to discern shapes.įor that ability to be brought into play, however, the eye must be able to focus. Eagles, hawks and many other birds are well-known for their visual acuity. No UK network partner has been announced at this stage. We say that a sharp-eyed person has “the eyes of an eagle.” Eagles are reported to be able to spot a rabbit from a distance of two miles. Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino will Executive Produce for Eagle Eye. Matt Baker ( Hotel Portofino, Professor T, Suspect) heads up the writing team, which also comprises Stephen Brady ( Professor T), Sarah Freethy ( The Porcelain Maker) and Daniella DeVinter ( Before We Die), all of whom have personal experience relating to autism. Maarten Moerkerke ( 13 Commandments) is directing the series, which is adapted from the original French series Astrid and Raphaelle. The show is being produced in association with Belgium’s Happy Duck Films and has support from the Belgian Tax Shelter. The series marks the latest collaboration between UK producer Eagle Eye and Germany-based producer-distributor Beta, following ITV’s Professor T, the Natascha McElhone-starrer Hotel Portofino and The Couple Next Door, which stars Sam Heughan ( Outlander, Suspect) and Eleanor Tomlinson ( The Outlaws, Poldark) and recently became Channel 4’s biggest scripted streaming launch ever. Neuro-diversity will play a thematic role in the series, with all neuro-divergent characters within the series will be played by neuro-diverse actors - including Purvis.
